Refrigerants, also known as refrigerants, refrigerants, snow seeds, are the medium of energy conversion in various heat engines. These substances usually increase power by reversible phase transitions, such as gas-liquid phase transitions. For example, the steam in the steam engine, the snow in the refrigerator and so on. Generally, when a steam engine is working, the heat energy of steam is released and converted into mechanical energy to generate original power, while the snow seeds of a refrigerator are used to transfer the heat at low temperatures to high temperatures.

Halogenated hydrocarbons (especially chlorofluorocarbons) are the most common working medium in traditional industry and life, but they are being phased out because of the hole in the ozone layer. Other widely used working media are ammonia, sulfur dioxide and non-halogenated hydrocarbons (e.g. methane).
